Or feel free to make a request for us to cover something in particular on this topic.

In the meantime, have a look at this great little Y-Adapter made by KV Connection. It’s the iPhone 1/8 inch microphone and headphone adapter - 3.5mm 4 conductor TRRS Male to 3.5mm TRS Jacks”

“This adapter allows you to connect a standard microphone with 3.5mm (1/8 inch) connector to the iPhone or other compatible device for quality recording and provides a 3.5mm stereo (audio out/headphone) jack for audio playback to standard headphones, speakers or audio input to other devices. This adapter incorporates pasive components
which provide DC blocking/isolation between the microphone input for device protection, as well as, impedance matching components for allowing a wide variety of microphones to be used with the device. This adapter is the perfect solution for interfacing your new phone with your stereo, computer, home theater system, headphones and/or using your own quality microphone for recording or production.”

  1. ALM also offers an adapter with a pre-amplified headphone out, which apparently means you can monitor the sound while recording. It’s $60, so I guess it depends how useful you think that option will be.

Great blog by the way! I’m going to find this very useful.
