How Journalists use iPhones to create award-winning short films
The international journalists network recently did a story that covered The Original iPhone Film Festival and some of our 2011 winning films. We were fortunate to have many of our entries from around the globe. The ijnet article is further validation of something we really believe in here at iPhonefilmmaker.com and that’s the empowerment and democratization of filmmaking that the iPhone provides.
Here is a bit of the article by Margaret Looney with a link to the entire piece on their site.
“Just about any documentary shot with a film crew and expensive equipment can make waves, but when you film award-worthy material solely on a mobile phone, that’s a feat.
Winners of the non-fiction category of the Original iPhone Film Festival prove journalists don’t need much to tell great stories.
These budding filmmakers used a variety of techniques to address the limitations of the hand-held, low-cost equipment.
First place winner Michael Guhil of the Philippines had never used an iPhone to film a story, much less for a non-fiction piece of work. Using the self-described “mobile studio in his pocket,” he tackled a real issue with a phone that wasn’t even his….”

How One Radio Reporter Ditched His Equipment for an iPhone 4
Everyone once in awhile an iPhoneFilmmaker story comes across our radar that is simply too good not to share. Well this one is by Neil Augenstein from WTOP- who writes about the iPhone 4 as a single, in the filed solution for capturing audio and video. “Now, with the Apple iPhone 4 and several apps, I can produce intricate audio and video reports, broadcast live, take and edit photos, write webcontent and distribute it through social media from a single device.” says Neil Augenstein. Since this article first hit the net back in April Continue reading
ABC’s Electric Playground speaks with The Original iPhone Film Festival
While we were in San Francisco last month we had an opportunity to meet Jose Sanchez who host’s ABC’s “Electric Playground”. Not only is Jose and his field producer, Jason Fairbrother super cool- they are way into the iPhoneFilmMaker scene. That was all we needed to hear so we jumped at the chance to do a segment for the wildly popular show Electric Playground. Continue reading

iPhone Filmmaking Apps worth a look
Anyone out there thinking of making a film based on Hangin’ with Friends? I am. That would combine some passions (friends.. hangin’), AND it would be the only chance I’d have at beating my friend Lauren who essentially ruined that game for me. Making movies about apps could end up being like shooting into the monitor (If you’ve never done that, try it. You’ll feel like a 5-year-old again for about 5 seconds before you realize someone might be watching you). However, making movies WITH some of the amazing apps out there can be transformative. Continue reading
Pico Flex Dolly- iPhoneFilmmakers rejoice.
Ok so maybe “rejoice” is a bit strong but this thing is pretty cool. First of all it reminds me of my skateboard days as a kid and that makes me feel good right away. Look at those wheels. Pretty sweet because you know by just looking at them they roll smoothly. HIgh quality wheels and bearings for sure. Precision carved metal- someone put some thought into this thing. Continue reading
“Night Fishing” - Movie Making insight from iPhonefilmmaker
Making movies with your iPhone can be fun, simple, and effortless. That’s because a movie can be about anything: your kid scoring an unbelievable goal in soccer, your roommate telling a crazy story about what happened last night, a hard-hitting documentary about your coworker stealing your lunch from the mini fridge, or the simple beauty of a sunrise. Having one of the world’s most portable and easy to use cameras in your pocket at just the right moment can be invaluable for those kinds of movies. But what if you want to shoot something requiring more planning and even, dare I say it, a budget? Nobody in their right mind would spend the money on locations, crew, gear… not to mention the blood sweat and Continue reading
ECHO ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter by Sonnet
iPhone filmmakers are living on the edge - of a technology revolution in media. While other image capturers are borrowing friend’s trucks and vans to lug portabraces full of camera equipment, batteries and chargers to a legitimately permitted location, the enlightened are sliding their 4.9 oz film studio out of their pocket and quietly whispering “action”. Ok, maybe I’m laying it on a little thick, but the truth is, if you’re using your iPhone to make any kind of expressive media, you are out there. And one thing that every pioneer has experienced is roadblocks. Rarely is the path clear. For instance, what do you do with all this wonderful stuff you’re shooting? In this case I’m not referring to how to edit it, Continue reading
